BREAKDOWNS · Agency PLAYBOOK
THE CREDENTIALS (public record): In October 2022, Luo Yonghao — the signature host of Douyin's live-commerce rise — crossed to arch-rival Taobao for a Double 11 appearance with his company Jiao Ge Peng You. The debut night, per company statements and third-party estimates reported by NBD and Chinese tech media: 26 million cumulative viewers, 1.1 million new followers gained in the session, and estimated GMV of ¥210 million. The team repeated the move on JD.com in May 2023 with a reported ¥150 million+ debut. Meanwhile his company disclosed multi-platform operations across Douyin, Taobao, and JD as core strategy — and later reported its first US livestream sessions exceeding $1 million GMV as it expanded overseas. The strategic claim of this breakdown: platform exclusivity died in that October, and US live commerce is running the same movie several years behind.
WHAT THEY DID: the crossover was engineered as an event, not a relocation. Rather than quietly opening a Taobao account, Jiao Ge Peng You announced the appearance, let the platform rivalry generate the press, and treated the debut as a one-night spectacle with founder-level hosting and category-leading brands. The room itself changed subtly for the new audience: pacing slower, product mix shifted to Taobao's strengths (higher-ticket electronics and appliances, where Luo's gadget-founder persona fit), and the trust format — unsolicited disclaimers, honest defect mentions — carried over intact, because that was the portable asset.
