The Florasis playbook: how one host relationship built a billion-yuan brand

Updated 2026-10-16 · Sources & methodology noted inline

THE CREDENTIALS (public record): Florasis (Hua Xizi), a Hangzhou beauty brand founded in 2017, is the canonical case of a brand engineered around a single livestreamer relationship. The numbers, from brokerage research and data trackers reported in Chinese financial media (Guoyuan Securities research via JRJ.com; Moojing market data): the carved-lipstick SKU launched April 2019, entered Austin Li's room the following month, and saw monthly sales grow 165% to ¥5.95 million — then reach ¥23.95 million by November 2019. In 2020 Florasis appeared in Li's room 71 times — more than five times a month. An industry formula circulated widely in 2020-2021: 'one new brand = Austin Li's livestream + 5,000 Xiaohongshu reviews + 2,000 Zhihu answers.' At Double 11 2019, its 'air setting powder' sold over 700,000 units (Guoyuan Securities). This breakdown is what the brand-side of that machine looked like.

WHAT THEY DID (the brand's playbook): Florasis didn't buy ad slots — they co-built products with the host. Li was given early prototypes to critique; packaging, shades and naming were adjusted to his feedback before launch, so that when the product debuted in his room, he was presenting something he had a hand in making. That is a fundamentally different asset than a media buy: the host's endorsement carried manufacturing-process credibility, not just reach. The supporting layer was deliberate: the Xiaohongshu and Zhihu content was seeded to answer the questions Li's room would raise — ingredient safety, shade comparisons, price justification — so a viewer who left the livestream to research landed on pre-built reassurance.
