BREAKDOWNS · Agency PLAYBOOK
THE CREDENTIALS (public record): On January 9, 2024, Dong Yuhui — by then the most beloved host in Chinese live commerce — opened his new independent account, 'Time with Yuhui' (Yuhui Tongxing), for its first session. The numbers, compiled by Sina Tech and data platforms (DuoDuoData) from platform-visible metrics: the account started the night at 4.168 million followers and ended under four hours later at 7.089 million — roughly one new follower every second, ~300,000 in four hours. Likes: 1.27 billion versus East Buy's 150 million in the same window. Cumulative views: 54.31 million versus East Buy's 15.45 million. Peak concurrent viewers hit 2 million within the first hour (1.65 million at 45 minutes, per his own team's announcements). GMV was reported above ¥100 million in that single under-four-hour session. All of this for a room that sold the same categories — books,农产品, everyday goods — with the same format he had always used. This breakdown asks why migration of an audience works at all, and what made it total.
WHAT HE DID: nothing new, and that was the strategy. Dong opened by thanking the audience, referenced the 'mothers-in-law' (his fanbase's self-appointed nickname) with specific warmth, told the story of the account's founding plainly, and then ran his established format — teaching segments, literary asides, product slots with the same disclaimer style ('buy it if you need it; don't if you don't'). Two deliberate choices stand out: he repeatedly acknowledged viewers' purchasing power while lowering the pressure ('if your family gave you a purchase quota tonight, this item is worth it'), and he credited his fans' clip-making explicitly ('I've seen the videos you cut — they're wonderful'), which turned the audience's own content into the room's social proof.
