Candles & Home Fragrance: the sensory script (when you can't transmit smell)

Updated 2026-10-16 · Sources & methodology noted inline

Fragrance is the hardest category to sell on live because the core sense — smell — doesn't transmit through a screen. The script solves this by translating scent into language, memory, and visual evidence. This is soft-intensity, story-led selling: whisper energy, not hype. US fragrance buyers are scent-literate and marketing-allergic; 'smells amazing' converts nobody.

HOOK: 'I can't make you smell this through the screen — so instead I'm going to tell you what it smells like, and then prove the quality the only way I can.' Then show the candle: the pour, the wick, the label, the burn — visual quality signals substitute for the missing sense.

THE LOOP: 1) Scent translation using the memory method: anchor every scent to a concrete, shared memory — 'This is the smell of the lobby of a hotel you can't afford but once walked through' or 'It's October in New England, the flannel version of a smell.' Avoid perfume-pyramid jargon ('top notes of bergamot'); use images, not ingredients. 2) Quality proof on camera: show the full melt pool ('see how it burns edge to edge — that's the wax quality, and it's why this doesn't tunnel'), show the wick trim, name the wax and the burn hour count honestly. 3) Price anchor via candle-industry standards: 'A 45-hour soy candle at a boutique is $38-48. Here's what this one is.' 4) Room-size honesty: 'This is a bedroom candle, not an open-plan candle — if your room is big, you want the two-wick.'
