Host economics: what a live hour should cost and what it should return

Updated 2026-10-16 · Sources & methodology noted inline

FIELD NOTE: an agency owner showed me a host contract he was proud of — base plus 8% commission, signed for six months. I asked one question: who's running links and vouchers? Nobody. The host was pitching and self-operating, which capped click-through exactly as the cost stack predicts, and the 8% commission was paying for loop quality the room structurally couldn't deliver. He hired an operator at $15/hour two weeks later and told me the commission finally started earning itself. The cost stack isn't overhead; it's the machine the revenue runs on.

METHODOLOGY: cost-and-return ranges for staffed live rooms, aggregated from agency-tier member operations, October 2026 revision. These are planning instruments for multi-room operators and brands hiring hosts — solo sellers should read this as 'what am I paying myself per hour, and is the model viable when I do.' All ranges assume US labor market costs and are stated as costs per live hour, the only unit that survives contact with a P&L.
