Retention curves: the 90-second cliff and the 30-minute wall

Updated 2026-10-16 · Sources & methodology noted inline

FIELD NOTE: a beauty room I tracked ran 800-entry sessions that bled out in twelve minutes. The host read it as proof the content was bad and kept rewriting demos. The curve said otherwise — entries were huge, decay was instant, which is a packaging problem, not a content problem. Her covers promised a price reveal; the room opened with a three-minute personal monologue. We moved the reveal to second fifteen and the 90-second hold jumped without a single demo change. Read the curve before you touch the content.

METHODOLOGY: retention curves describe what percentage of a session's peak audience remains at each minute mark. These working ranges come from aggregated member-session data across categories, October 2026 revision. Retention is the most platform-sensitive number in this library — algorithm changes move it within weeks — so date-check any figure before acting on it, including this one.
