LIVE ROOM TACTICS · Pro PLAYBOOK
The hold is the most powerful and most abused tactic in live commerce: you demonstrate a product, build visible demand for it, and refuse to open the price until the room's appetite is explicit. Done honestly, it's excellent retail theater — the price genuinely isn't ready because the offer genuinely isn't assembled yet. Done dishonestly ('I'm not allowed to tell you the price!'), it's the fake-scarcity garbage that US regulators and platforms have started fining, and it poisons the tactic for everyone.
Why it works: two mechanisms stack. First, unresolved tension holds attention — an unanswered question ('what does it cost?') is an open loop, and open loops are the strongest known driver of sustained attention. Second, social proof compounds inside the hold: every 'type ME if you want the price' comment is a public vote that late joiners can see. When the price finally opens, it lands on a room that has already watched itself want the product — the conversion isn't persuasion anymore, it's permission.
