COMPLIANCE · Pro PLAYBOOK
WHY KIDS' PRODUCTS CARRY STRUCTURAL RISK: selling children's products on live involves two regulated domains at once — product safety (CPSC territory: toys are among the most regulated consumer categories in the US, with testing, certification, and tracking-label requirements for children's products) and marketing-to-children rules (COPPA, which restricts data collection from under-13 audiences and constrains how platforms themselves operate). A live seller in this category inherits obligations from both sides whether or not they intended to address children — the category chooses the obligation, not your stated audience intention.
THE PRODUCT-SAFETY STACK (THE NON-NEGOTIABLES): children's products sold in the US generally must be tested by a CPSC-accepted laboratory and certified under the Children's Product Certificate framework, with conformity to applicable standards (the toy safety standard ASTM F963 and the consumer product rules on lead, phthalates, and small parts being the load-bearing ones). For a live seller this is a sourcing discipline: every kids' SKU needs its test reports and CPC documentation before its first stream, and 'my supplier said it's certified' must be upgraded to 'I hold the certificate with the laboratory name on it.' Platforms require this documentation at listing level, and CPSC enforcement includes recalls that are public, permanent, and brand-ending for small sellers.
