How to read a benchmark without lying to yourself

Updated 2026-10-16 · Sources & methodology noted inline

FIELD NOTE, from a member call last month: a seller in the home category told me her conversion was '7.2%' and asked if that was good. I asked what her sessions looked like — two sessions, both paid-traffic boosts, 40 viewers each. Her number wasn't a conversion rate; it was weather. She'd been quoting that 7.2% to herself for three weeks and making decisions off it. This unit exists because of conversations like that one — not to give you a prettier number, but to keep one honest.

METHODOLOGY FIRST (read this before any number in this unit): every range published in this library is a working range — an aggregation of observed sessions across members and public reporting, normalized where possible per 1,000 live viewers or per 1,000 viewer-minutes, and rounded deliberately wide. Working ranges are instruments for detecting a broken session, not league tables. If you treat them as targets to quote on social media, you will be wrong twice: once by overstating your data, once by optimizing the wrong variable.
