The Anchor Stack: three reference prices that make your real price feel small

Updated 2026-10-16 · Sources & methodology noted inline

The anchor stack is a pricing presentation, not a discount trick. Before you ever say your price, you establish two honest reference points — what the comparable product costs at retail, and what the same item costs in its premium form — so that when your live price lands third, it feels like a conclusion rather than a pitch. Every mature live-commerce market runs some version of this; the US version just requires every anchor to be verifiable.

Why it works: anchoring is the most replicated effect in pricing psychology. The first number a buyer hears becomes the reference against which every later number is judged. A $34 bracelet presented alone is 'thirty-four dollars'; the same bracelet presented after '$120 at comparable boutiques' and '$89 in our own sterling version' is 'a third of what I was just shown.' The discount framing (was $89, now $34) triggers reactance in US buyers who've seen it faked ten thousand times; the anchor framing shows instead of tells.
